A Simple List for Getting out of a Blogging Funk

Blogging can be hard, especially when you’re first starting out. We go into it knowing it will take awhile to hit that sweet spot, and yet it’s still so easy to fall into the pit of defeat and lose motivation before that happens. Here is some real talk: I am writing this post because I am in a blogging funk right now! It’s gonna be fine, guys. Here’s a simple list I’ve put together that has helped me and will hopefully do the same for you!

How to Get Out of that Blogging Funk

Sit down and think about it.

Give yourself a block of time and find the determination to only focus on your blog. Have you heard of breaking writer’s block by getting a piece of paper out and writing out your “constant stream of consciousness” within a set amount of time? This unleashes all sorts of thoughts and ideas you probably didn’t realize you had. Do this same thing, but make it a list of blogging ideas. Topics, people, projects, anything that comes to mind that might make a great post. It doesn’t matter how many things you write down that may seem completely silly, because odds are you will write down plenty of amazing ideas.

Get motivation from others.

We all have websites and blogs that we look at and aspire to someday have for ourself. Go to those sites and browse around. I’m not saying you should go to your favorite blog, pick a post and write your own version of it. The point of this exercise is to look at these works and get your brain back in that “I gotta do this” mode. Looking at websites that inspire you will almost always put you in the mood to get back to work.

Give a crap, but don’t give a crap.

I’ve gone over a week without blogging. Until I sat down today to write this post I felt really bad about it. How will I have a successful blog if I take two weeks off from posting?! Where in the world did my motivation go?! The truth is, taking that week off probably didn’t effect my ability to have a successful blog. Sure, I didn’t get much traffic this week, but it’s not like all of my followers abandoned me!

Beating yourself up will help nothing. Sit down and focus and soon enough your motivation will come back. Keep working and be true to your own passions and your blog will thrive!

Morning Routine Ideas to Start Your Day Off Right

I’m sure it isn’t a foreign idea to any of you that what you do in the morning can drastically change the outcome of your day. That’s why I relish every morning the same way I relish a day off. After all, it is “time off” even if you only have an hour or two before you have to go into work. The best thing you can do is make the most of it. Do just that by finding your own morning routine with the help of this list.

Simple Tips for the Perfect Morning Routine

Wake up with enough time to have an hour or two to yourself.

This is the toughest part of getting a good morning routine for a lot of people, but I promise if you can get in the habit of waking up early you will see how amazing it is to have that time to yourself. Try setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier every day until you reach the time you want and put your alarm clock outside of arm’s reach so you have to get up to turn it off.

(Check out this alarm clock that runs away from you until you turn it off. It’s sure to get you out of bed!)

Once you’re able to wake up early, use the morning to do things you love and that will put you in the right mindset to tackle your day. Do 15 minutes of meditation, cuddle with your dog, or catch up on chores. You don’t even necessarily need to do anything productive as long as you are doing something for yourself.

Drink warm water with lemon and eat breakfast.

Hot water with lemon juice has so many benefits. The warm water mixed with the pectin fiber from the lemon aids in digestion and the vitamins found in lemon juice helps flush out toxins, keeps your skin heathy and energizes you. All of this first thing in the morning can make a huge difference in how you feel all day long.

It would be cliche to say “breakfast is the most important part of the day” if it weren’t so true. Eating a healthy breakfast will make your body feel great and if you take the time to cook or prepare breakfast it can make you feel productive which will motivate you all day long.

Both of these tips are a great part of any healthy morning routine.

Practice mindfulness.

Being mindful means being aware of the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and body. In simple terms, mindfulness means staying in the moment, every moment. This is a therapy technique that can completely change the way you look at yourself, at your day and at your life.

Spend every morning being mindful. While drinking your cup of coffee, be aware of how wonderful it tastes, how warm it is and how calm and peaceful you feel. While doing chores, be aware of how accomplished you feel. While getting ready, be aware of how your clothes make you feel, how much you have to be grateful for and all the things you love about yourself. Practice mindfulness every morning until it becomes second nature. Let it heal you.


You might think “why would I wake up early to relax if I could just stay asleep longer?” I don’t blame you. It seems silly. But what I can tell you is that sleeping later means prolonging the inevitable moment of not wanting to get out of bed and waking up early and relaxing means starting your day with peace. This doesn’t have to mean yoga or meditation. It could mean sitting quietly with a cup of coffee or reading for 20 minutes before checking your phone. However you choose to do it, put yourself in a place of calm and improve your day ahead of time.

Do whatever the fuck you want.

As much as Ive tried, I can’t technically tell you how to start your mornings. Everyone is different. Play around with my advice and see what works best for you. The number one tip that I know will never fail is this one: do whatever you want. You know what makes you happy, you know what makes you calm. Wake up and do those things. The more you celebrate yourself, the more positive your attitude and the more equipped you are to have a successful day, every day.

Lady Boss Guide to New Year’s Resolutions

Wake up and shake off that New Year’s hangover, people! It’s January 1st: the official day of new beginnings and future hope. And what is the number one tradition of a brand new January 1st? New Year’s Resolutions, of course!

We’ve all done it; got pumped, made a few goals, went full speed and fizzled out by March. So how do we make 2017 different? How can we stick to our goals? Lady Boss Nation has compiled a list of tried and true habits to get you in the right mindset to smash the crap out of your goals this year.

Make a plan.

Obvious, right? Most of us know, however, that making a plan and sticking to it is a lot harder than it seems. You write down your goals, map out hopeful milestones and when you miss your first one you’re bummed out and motivation has left the building.

This year, try planning one week at a time. You don’t know how quickly you can reach those milestones until you’re on your way. Sitting down every Sunday and reflecting on your week’s accomplishments while writing down the next steps for your week ahead will not only help you plan, but will give you a weekly reminder to really think hard about what you’re trying to achieve.

Don’t complicate things.

My goal for 2016 was to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. I wrote down comprehensive workout plans and tried the extensive meal prepping and it was really helpful until I started getting overwhelmed. I quickly ran out of motivation to continue doing all of these things and I could feel myself going into a downward spiral.

I needed things to be easier. So I stopped meal prepping and started taking the basics to work, like veggies and fruit and the leftovers from whatever healthy meal we had the night before. I reminded myself that just getting exercise was more important than how I was exercising (the workout programs came later when I had a feel for it all).

By simplifying my plan, I never lost motivation and by May I had lost a total of 40 pounds and had never felt stronger. I still use a simple plan today, because living a healthy life should be as easy as possible when you’re busy being a lady boss.

Believe you are the person you want to become.

Yes, I’m talking about visualization! It might sound silly, but think of it this way:

Say your goal is to make major headway in the workplace. Great! But be specific. So, now your new year’s resolutions include getting a promotion and the raise you deserve. Much better. But what if instead of making a list of ways to achieve these goals you went back to work in 2017 with this in your head:

I am the type of person who will take on any challenge at work.
I am the type of person who keeps a positive attitude towards co-workers.
I am the type of person who can confidently discuss my progress at work and clearly define what I expect from my employer.

This type of attitude is life-changing and it can work with any goal you have your sights set on.

Accountability. Accountability. Accountability.

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again. Accountability is super helpful in achieving your goals! But maybe you’ve been burned before. Maybe your support system wasn’t as supportive as you thought or you fizzled out and felt embarrassed that people were expecting you to succeed.

The key to accountability is to find the right support system. As I mentioned above, 2016 was about losing weight for me. My lady squad was totally on board and encouraged me the whole way through! By the end of the year, I made the big decision to start my own blog and while my girl gang was supportive, none of them could really relate. So I reached out to a friend who liked to pick up side hustles here and there and we quickly found out that a blog was in both of our near futures! Now I can bitch to my girlfriends about leg day and pick this other friend’s brain about blogging and I’ve got support flying at me from all different directions.

A new year is upon us, which has undoubtedly brought on an overwhelming sense of reflection for many of us.

Maybe you started a new job, ended or began a relationship, or maybe you enjoyed an entire year of binging Netflix (we call that self care). As a whole, we collectively grieved the death of David Bowie, survived a particularly grueling election year and probably sang along to 24K Magic in our cars.

When I look back through 2016 and through the last few years, I can’t help but get giddy with excitement for the future. Every generation has had it’s own version of female badass-ery and today we proudly fly the flag of the Lady Boss era.
